This type book is an attempt to visualize the "Mary's Room" thought experiment, created by Frank Jackson. The thought experiment questions how well we can understand something without having really experienced it.
This book asks something similar of its audience, as the left-hand pages are filled with scientific information on how the human eye interprets light. The right-hand pages are filled with color, overlaid with quotes from people seeing in full color for the first time.
As the book goes on, the typesetting on the left-hand pages begins to become more and more compressed, hitting a constraint it cannot surpass. Meanwhile, on the right-hand pages, color blocks and typography expand until they consume full spreads, expressing an experience that knowledge cannot fully replace.
